Re: What did you guys play before WoT?
I used to play Company of Heroes and irs related mods. To be fair, until SEGA fucked the graphics up, WoT was only secondary to CoH BK mod. Since CoH is now incompatible with my PC (2.7 has horrible screenshakes, whereas 2.602 - esentially the same version rigged for other MP servers - was running w/o any problems), I now almost exclusively play WoT (and some WT).
I sometimes install Red Alert 2 just for the feeling, and I also love the campaign of CoD4 (the best of the MW series IMO).
Before we had internet at home, I played a lot with S.W.I.N.E., and some other then-pretty-good RTS's.

Like you diavolo, I started on the old zx81, then onto zx spectrum (Manic Miner FTW!)
through the Amiga days into PC's.
Online gaming started with the original COD, and branched out to COD2+4, WoW for a few years, Aion, Fallen Earth then finally to WoT. I can't see me moving on to any others, I'm totally addicted

Re: What did you guys play before WoT?
We had a BBC B which is far better then the Spectrum. Elite was great, so much atmosphere with so little means.
It also had Revs which was a pretty good racing game.
The next computer was the archimedes and it had Conqueror. That was a great game.
On PC i played Civilization (up to 4). Mainly great Civ III mods like Escape From Zombie Island 2 and Age of Imperialism Deluxe.
Really loved Alpha Centauri with the cool alien intelligence and off course Planetbusters. :-)
And lots of Total War. I like Rome Total War most. Pin down the enemy and charge the OP armored elephants into the rear of the army.
Oh and i played a lot of guitar until a year and a half but my fun band quit because the bass player (my best friend) became a dad and for now there is no money for luxeries like hanging out with the band (we used to run up a good beer bill at the practice place). We'll get back to it in a couple of years but now i don't need to make songs so i don't play it much anymore.

Re: What did you guys play before WoT?
My first multiplayer addiction was Quake 3. Second addiction was StartCraft BroodWar! I LOVED SCBW. I even sat down and practised macros for getting top units ASAP. Who would want three Ultralisk in their base within' 8 minutes? Not me! So I learned that.
Then there is/were games I like/-d very much but not addicted to:
- Civilisation 5.
- Hearts of Iron 2 and atleast 5 stand-alone mods for it (easy to create your own mod!).
- Hearts of Iron 3
- Battlefield 1942.
- Battlefield 2.
- Age of Empires.
- Age of Empires 2.
- World in Conflict.
- World at War.
- Sim City 4.
- Rise of Nations.
As you may have noticed I'm more of a GRTS*- and RTS*-gamer and not the average FPS*-tard.
(*Grand *Real Time Strategy, *First Person Shooter)

Re: What did you guys play before WoT?
What first got me into the whole "boom boom boom tenks boom boom" mentality was Panzer General. Hours and hours into that game. Other games...let's see.
Master of Orion 1 and 2 (not 3,kill that one with fire)
Civilization series
Hearts of Iron 2 and some mods, especially Darkest Hour and Kaiserreich
Mass Effect series
KotOR 1 and 2
Neverwinter 1 and 2
Starcraft (all of them ofc)
Warcraft (all of them ofc, even WoW though not a lot of it)
Fallout (yes, naturally all of them though my fave is New Vegas)
Baldur's Gate (2 preferably)
Dragon Age 1 and 2
I'm a stronk RPG man but I like my strategy games a lot.

Re: What did you guys play before WoT?
PC:
I started my PC gaming with Worms Armageddon and Heroes of Might and Magic III. We played a gladiator game called Areena 5. I played Wolfenstein ET MP.
Because I loved the HoMaM alot, I bought the sequel, HoMaM IV. First I thought that it was not as good - but after many years, I think it is the best HoMaM game in the series.
My other friend showed me a game called Silent Storm. I have the add-on to it too.
As I got a more powerful computer, I began to play Dirt 3, Amnesia and XCOM: Enemy Unknown, WoT and War Thunder and GTAs.
The reason why I have Resident Evil 1-3 on my PC, is the fact that I was a console kid. Never the less, the games that I named are the ones that I still play. One should never forget the great times of childhood
Consoles:
NES 8-bit, sold -> Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, sold -> PS1 -> PS2 -> Wii -> Sega Genesis, re-bought.
As a kid, we had only ~3 games to those cart-consoles. That amount was enough . As we were not the richest ones in the town, we had to sell the previous console to get a new one. That is why I re-bought my beloved Genesis. I have a few games to it atm, because I collect CIBs only.
PS1 era came. I only played Crash series, Gran Turismo 2 and James Bond: The world is not enough (which is a pretty decent movie based game!) My friend had N64 and PS1, so I had the chance to play Goldeneye - it was awesome.
When I was 9 years old, we played the Resident Evil 2 and 3, even though we did not speak English at all . I still play the RE series, and a few months ago I bought the Code: Veronica X for PS2.
PS2 and Wii were a bit disappointing. Only a few great games. I usually play Gran Turismo 4 with DFP 900 deg driving wheel.
I have many so many favourite games, I have problems choosing what to play

Re: What did you guys play before WoT?
My first PC game was Age of Empire 1, followed by the sequels of the franchise. I then got into CoD 4 where i formed a clan with my best friend and gaming buddy. There we had good times and actually got pretty good in it.
Last big game I played and still play from time to time was World in Conflict. I'm still a big fan of it. It's just insane how deep the game becomes once you figured out all the battle machanics. Playing it for 5 years now and still learning lol.
Well and since World in conflict is dying slowly i came to WoT were some of my WiC buddies came to too.

I tried world in conflict once (torrented it TBH), but I found the campaign a bit frustrating. They say that MP is something to look at, but with a cracked game that isn'T an option.

Mostly console stuff, but never seriously. CoD and the like.
I do love the Total War series though, most played games by far. Medieval 2 is my favourite but Rome is a close second. Shogun and Empire haven't really captivated me as much though despite being really fun. Hopefully Rome 2 will recapture the magic.

Personally i think the campaign in WiC is just plain average RTS campaign, and to be honest i never liked Campaigns in RTS games.piritskenyer wrote:I tried world in conflict once (torrented it TBH), but I found the campaign a bit frustrating. Multiplayer is just amazing. The game mechanics are top notch and still you get a fast paced gameplay full of action. I can recommend it warmly to you since it's very cheap on steam now. $5 or so. However the community is pretty tough now. Only 3-5 populated servers running and there are a lot of fags who pick on new players and kick them from servers just because they have a low rank.
PS: My favorite campaign of all time was Call of Duty 4. It may be a dumb shooter but i had such a blast playing single player like in no other game.

Re: What did you guys play before WoT?
I've been gaming since about 1987, when we got a Spectrum +3. From there I went to the Amiga, and finally to PC in about 1995. I also had a Nintendo NES.
Games I love/have loved (by no means exhaustive)
Spectrum
Dizzy!
Trap Door
NES:
Super Mario Bros 1,2 & 3
Solar Jetman
Amiga:
Worms
Lemmings
Turrrican II (by god that was a hard game)
Road rash
Hard Drivin'
Frontier Elite II (second place only to WoT as the game I've put most time into)
Sim City
F-15 Strike Eagle 2
F-117 Nighthawk
B-17 Flying Fortress
UFO: Enemy Unknown (yes, they made it for the Amiga)
PC:
Quake (my first outing into online gaming, was in a clan at Uni)
the Half Life series
Frontier First Encounters
Live For Speed
rFactor
Flight Sim 2004
City of Heroes
Mass Effect
Since Quake I've never really been able to get back into online shooters, I think maybe because my reflexes aren't those of a teenager anymore. I haven't got the patience to go through the weeks of getting my arse handed to me by 13 year olds with squeaky voices hyped up to the eyeballs on 'Mountain Doo' that you have to go through before you can actually start to enjoy playing. One of the reasons I love WoT is the slightly more sedate pacing.

The Campaign was somehow different form other campaigns I played in RTS's (I like them, they teach you basic gameplay), but you are right, by far the best campaign I played was that of CoD4. VERY good story.Siggimaster wrote:Personally i think the campaign in WiC is just plain average RTS campaign, and to be honest i never liked Campaigns in RTS games.piritskenyer wrote:I tried world in conflict once (torrented it TBH), but I found the campaign a bit frustrating. Re: What did you guys play before WoT?
CoD 4 was a great campaign. Its just a shame the others didn't follow. Because Russia can totally invade the US and then afterwards all of Europe in 1 day.
Campaign are best when the story is gritty, small scale, and believable. I love how the news reports justified the sinking of the ship at the start at the end of the game.

True, MW2 and 3 was total BS after that.
I also loved Gaz's intro speech:
"- World's in great shape: civil war in russia with 15000 nukes at stake
- Just another day at the office... What's the bad news?
- We got a new guy fresh out of selection..."
